Pain Management

Pain Management is a tricky subject, especially for an Urgent Care Center.  Patients often come to us looking for relief from pain.  We deal with this in many different ways, but always with the best interest of the patient in mind.

Often times, narcotics are not the best solution to treat the patient's condition.  As an example, patients who have muscle tightening and/or strains may request narcotics to dull the pain, but this can prove detrimental.  Masking the pain will not lead to curing or fixing the underlying pathology.  It can, in many instances, make it worse, as further injury may occur.  In the case of a muscle strain or pull, anti-inflammatory treatment is still recommended as the top priority for curing the problem.

Each individual is assessed by the physician at Velo Med, and the appropriate course of action is determined to fix the acute condition.  While you may be seeking narcotic medication for treatment, we feel that this is not often the best solution to cure your condition.

Chronic pain management is best provided by a primary care physician or a pain management office.  Urgent Care is not the appropriate place to obtain treatment for those with recurrent pain.

H1N1 update

The CDC is recommending H1N1 immunization for everyone at this point, regardless of age.  From their website:

CDC is now encouraging those who have been patiently waiting to receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, including people 65 and older, to get vaccinated depending on local supply.

Velo Med has a large supply of the vaccination.  Please stop by for your immunization!

Safety on the Road

One of the chief concerns we hear about cycling in Tucson is safety.

Naturally, cyclists must share the road with motorists. Some of the motor vehicle operators may not like to heed cyclists, making it imperative to stay alert at all times! We recommend brightly colored clothing to increase visibility.

Helmets are highly recommended, even in the desert sun. Your bicycle dealer can help you with fit. There are many models from which to choose, and many offer excellent ventilation. Try Miles Ahead Cyclery in Tucson (www.milesaheadcyclery.com) for options.

Hydration, as always, is a must, especially in the summer.

Finally, in case of emergency, consider precautions to alert medical personnel of pre-existing conditions. Wearing a RoadID Personal Identification band is a good example of informative safety gear. Be sure to list emergency contacts as well as pre-existing conditions if applicable. These are available for order at www.RoadID.com.

We wish you well in your continued pursuit of finding that perfect ride!

Helpful Web Application

http://www.itriagehealth.com is an excellent resource on the web.  There is a version for many smart phones/PDAs available, as well.  The iPhone version has been excellent.  Users can look up some symptoms, diseases and diagnoses.  In addition, there are links to area healthcare facilities, including Velo Med Urgent Care.  The application provides maps and contact information for you as well.
